It is a law of revolution in class society that what is forbidden, that is, what the ruling class imposes on the class that is ruled, becomes tabooed. Promiscuity of the aristocracy, while the bourgeois women had to be abstemious.

ADORNO: The proletarian class is one that exists under enormous prohibitions. They can only be done with these prohibitions when they make these tendencies their own. The proletarians must educate themselves in the bourgeois mechanisms of censure.

HORKHEIMER: Is self-rule not also some type of the domination of nature?

ADORNO: The domination of nature has two sides: technology [Technik] and dominion [Herrschaft][1] over oneself.
Does it actually make sense to speak about the sublation of contradictions in communism? Is the domination of nature not contained within the very concept of the consistent? [das Widerspruchlose – literally contradictionless] A society without contradictions would be one in which all the partial drives were genitally unified. The elimination of social contradiction could be expressed thus: that it would be one that arises from a principal [Prinzip]; in the sense of a deductive system. But is this moment of consistent unity not itself based on oppression? Is there not necessarily just as much oppression as there is consistency?
The concept of happiness [Glück] is gained from class society. The [psycho-]analytic concept is itself centralist. For Freud a person who is happy is one in whom sexual development is so complete that all the partial drives have been assimilated under the primacy of the genital drives. Is genital sexuality not a terrifying impoverishment when set against the possibilities of experience?

HORKHEIMER: Marx would say, in the communist society the people will be able to do what they want.

ADORNO: What the people want to do is not a last resort; indeed, it can itself be the product of a class society.

HORKHEIMER:The Genital[2] is not simply domination.

ADORNO: The partial drives register something correct against genitality

HORKHEIMER: What do you mean by Genital here? Freud uses the term to designate coitus. I would advocate a broader concept of the Genital. For example, to name as genital everything by which people achieve gratification [Genuß], with complete indifference as to how.

ADORNO: Gratification would not necessarily have to end with the satisfaction of the sexual organs. I believe titillation [Vorlust][3] is more than pleasure [Lust]

HORKHEIMER: In Freud the unitary concept is that of the libido.

ADORNO: In Freud there is a certain paltriness, it aways comes out in the Oedipus complex. I have the feeling as though it is connected to genitality (the question of the relation of generations). But it would be important to take the manifest dream content [Trauminhalt] just as seriously as the latent dream-thoughts. The decisive social content [Gehalt][4] lies immediately in the manifest: I believe that the ideal of the genital character is wholly bad. Its typical representative is Siegfried, conceived by the young Wagner as the proletariat. Very closely connected with this is the perversity of the happiness that can be achieved in bourgeois society.

HORKHEIMER: People can only imagine their happiness in the concept of “always the same thing again” [immer wieder dasselbe]:[5] [that is], death.

ADORNO: We attempt to formulate from what we know that which cannot be formulated. The question of the abolition of death and the question of the death drive a the antithesis to the genital drive are very closely connected.

HORKHEIMER: As mediation: Joys and pains. Two lovers can so strongly wish for death that even coitus seems banal. Freedom would be not taking part.

ADORNO: People’s utopias are very modest.

—————————

23. October 1939

HORKHEIMER: Als Vermittlung: Freude an Schmerzen.

Discussion from “Diskussionen über Sprache und Erkenntnis, Naturbeherrschung am Menschen, politische Aspekte des Marxismus”, in Horkheimer, Gesammelte Schriften, Hrsg. von Alfred Schmidt und Gunzelin Schmid Noerr, Band XII, s. 510-512,

[1] The typoscript says “Beherrschung” [domination], which is corrected by the editors of the Horkheimer complete edition.

[2] It is a strange fact that in English our language has come to refer to sexual organs with a nominalisation of an adjective. This linguistic formulation almost certainly has itself a deep analytic justification. But it leaves our language with a poverty – since the term for the sexual organ is already abstract. Hence when one refers to “the genital” in the abstract it must always sound like a reference to a concrete organ. In German these differences can be better expressed, and following the standard practices of the translation of philosophic texts I have opted to designate the abstract concept of the genital with a capital letter.

[3] This concept is a Freudian one, most thoroughly developed in Freud’s book on Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious. It appears at several crucial moments in Adorno’s writings. The standard translation for this word has become the calque “forepleasure”. I have opted for “titillation” here, as it comes somewhat closer to Freud’s usage, meaning a certain pleasure of the portending – but which is itself certainly pleasurable.

[4] Adorno uses the distinction between the discursive content [Inhalt] of dreams, and their content [Gehalt] in terms of their meaning.
